Bumblebee Behind The Bust

Bumblebee Behind The Bust

Bumblebee is one of the most beloved characters in the Transformers Cinematic Universe thanks to his loyalty and bravery in the face of adversity. We were first introduced to the character in Transformers (2007) as a sentient, living autonomous robot that can take the form of the now iconic Chevrolet Camaro. Although not the biggest or strongest Transformer, Bumblebee has a lot of heart, that’s why he’s one of Optimus Prime’s most trusted lieutenants with the important role of “Guardian Knight” to Sam Witwicky.

In this post, you can discover the story behind the Queen Studios Ultimate Scale Bumblebee bust inspired by this incredible character

INSPIRATION AND BACKGROUND

Bumblebee why we chose the character

WHY WE CHOSE THE CHARACTER

Bumblebee is one of the main Autobot characters featuring in all five of the live-action Transformers movies, as well as his own standalone film. Although he’s not the biggest or the strongest Autobot, he’s brave and loyal which helped him establish a strong bond with protagonist Sam Witwicky, winning our hearts in the process.

When “Bee” is in disguise, he takes the form of the Chevrolet Camaro, with a distinctive yellow paintwork and black racing stripes. His look has become iconic and the Queen Studios artists have enjoyed brining this character to life.

As he was the first Transformer to appear in the first movie, we thought it would be fitting to start the collection with Bumblebee.

WHY WE CHOSE THE POSE

The style and design of the Ultimate Scale Bumblebee bust is inspired by the “Transformers 3: Dark Side Of The Moon” movie poster. The design reference was chosen as it showcases the structure of the Camaro sports car (including front and rear doors; front grill and internal combustion engine parts), and the other features that make the Transformers so life-like and iconic.

For our artists, bringing the character to life in the form of a limited edition collectible is both challenging and rewarding. Our artists had to take into consideration the size and scale of the character, and work incredibly hard to reproduce an accurate bust in a much smaller scale.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Transformers Bust 3D Print

3D DESIGN

The 3D design process hasn’t been smooth sailing. Queen Studios’ 3D artists had to create the shape of the bust from three hundred and sixty degree angles. The team couldn’t miss one detail, as the success of the 3D design largely determines the quality of the finished product. If there is one deviation in detail, the whole bust could collapse completely.

Creating a structurally sound movie accurate sculpt is tricky at the best of times, but the difficulty is even greater for the Transformers. In total, Bumblebee is made up of more than 300 parts making this a monumental challenge. The work requires our 3D artists to be on their a-games, studying each angle carefully before sculpting and designing. This has been a challenge of epic proportions, but one we’re more than up for!

Bumblebee Paint Detailing

PAINTWORK

For the paintwork, we had to take into consideration how we could make each collectible as high-quality and as detailed as the last.

To achieve the best results, we decided to use similar spray techniques to how a car is sprayed which creates a more authentic look. However, these techniques had to be slightly modified to work on the material that we were using. To accomplish what we’re looking for, we first soak the materials with another raw substance to neutralise the PH levels. After testing to make sure we have the desired PH level, can then start to spray. The spray method is a multi-layer spray which allows us to transition between different sections and smaller parts with an even cover. The end result makes the Bumblebee bust look just like he did in the movie.

Detailing in the Ultimate Scale Bumblebee Bust

Finally, to make the Bumblebee bust look as close to the movie character as possible, we tried and tested a variety of different materials to make the carbon fiber parts look and feel as real as possible. In the end, we chose a carbon fiber wrap used on real cars to achieve the finest results, also adding the finishing touches to this incredible collectible.

WHAT MAKES BUMBLEBEE UNIQUE?

The Queen Studios mission is to create the most realistic and lifelike collectibles. We can’t achieve this without adding the unique features that makes our collectibles look so good.

As Bumblebee is a sentient, living autonomous robot, our artists quite rightly deemed it essential to include internal lighting to really bring “Bee” to life. Each limited edition Bumblebee bust comes with lights in the front headlights, tail-lights and eyes resulting in an awesome effect that looks great in any room. Especially with the lights turned down low.
